The 200 meters combines speed with running on a curve. It is longer than the 100 meters and requires quick running on a turn and then on a straight course. Leading runners finish in under 20 seconds.
Similar to the 100 meters, the event requires strong power surges, quick starts, and the capacity for working anaerobically. It also requires some endurance since the event is slightly longer. The athletes have to conserve their power smartly, mainly when exiting the curve and heading for the straight section. The current world record is by legend Usain Bolt. Training consists of beginning from blocks, quick running in the right way, resistance running, and specific curve running drills. The power used is derived from both the ATP-PC system as well as glycolysis, with some lactic acid accumulation towards the end. Although primarily being a power event, the 200 meters is useful in enhancing the capacity of endurance athletes in working anaerobically, running quick, as well as finishing strongly in longer races.
