Acclimatization

Acclimatization is the way the body adapts when the environment is changed, such as heat, elevated areas, or wet conditions. Acclimatization makes athletes perform better and safeguards them from unfavorable conditions. It is gradual with repeated exposure.

Acclimatization is quite necessary in endurance activities for racing or training. The body adapts to mountains by producing additional red blood cells in order to carry an increased amount of oxygen. During heat, the body adapts to profuse perspiring and temperature regulation. Most athletes arrive in race venues days or weeks beforehand so their bodies can adapt. Further, the risk of dehydration, heat stroke, altitude sickness, and decreased performance is increased should the body not adapt. Training techniques such as heat chambers, altitude tents, or training in such environments makes adapting faster. For performance in mountains or hot regions, acclimatization is paramount for the maximum endurance performance as well as safety.
