Attack

To attack in cycling is an attempt with force to drop the rest of the riders. It tests the power of a cyclist, their tactics, and their pain threshold.

A key concept in racing on the road, such as in the Tour de France, is an attack. It is when a rider suddenly accelerates in order to make the other riders expend extra effort. The attacking rider aims to create a gap between them and the rest of the riders and either win first or lead the rest of them. The most important part of an attack is how and when an athlete performs it. For example, if the main group is dispersed To attack, one must have the energy resources, and have faith in maintaining the lead. The attacks can be on hills, descents, or flat terrain of the race, with teams being able to mobilize resources in order to overtake the attacker. The attacks initially consume much energy, then much more in order to maintain the lead. Knowing when and how to make an attack indicates talent and skill in competition.
