Base Metabolic Rate

Metabolic Rate is the amount of energy your body uses when lying motionless for 24 hours. It indicates how many calories your body uses for vital functions such as breathing, blood circulation, and maintaining your body temperature.

BMR, determined after fasting for approximately 12 hours in a relaxed environment, accounts for approximately 60–70% of the daily total calories consumed. Age, sex, body composition, as well as genetics, influence BMR. Endurance athletes monitor BMR in order to develop feeding plans with sufficient calories for training while not gaining excess weight. Having knowledge of the BMR allows for matching calories consumed with calories burned through simple training, recovery, and demanding exercise. Knowing the BMR allows for enhancing eating plans prior, during, and post-workout in order to maintain performance as well as aid in recovery.
