A beach start is when the race begins on the shore, and the athletes begin running into open water to swim. It’s popular in triathlons, open-water swims, and aquathlons. Competitors sprint over sand—often 20–100 m—before jumping down into the water, so leg power, short sprints, and change of direction ability are all important. This type of explosive start introduces randomness in position and velocity from the time the gun goes off.
