Bonking

Bonking occurs when your body depletes its energy reserves during exercise or racing. It is the result of insufficient glycogen in the body or inadequate water intake. The effect is the extreme sensation of fatigue, dizziness, and sometimes not being able to continue.

Bonking, or “hitting the wall,” can occur in long races such as bicycle racing or long-distance running. It typically occurs when you don’t eat enough or strain too rapidly. It is your body telling you that it is out of power. It is difficult to regain power in the midst of a race, but some sugar or electrolytes can assist. The best solution is to consume regularly beforehand and drink through your race. It is difficult once bonked, so avoid it.
