Brake Pads

Brake pads are rubbery blocks that press against the rim of a bike to slow it down. They are an essential component of the braking system and are extremely important in terms of safety and control. They wear out with use and must be replaced periodically.

Endurance riders require good brakes, particularly when climbing hills or encountering difficult sections of course. Old or dirty brake pads make braking difficult and can damage the rim. There are specialist brake pads for wet conditions or carbon wheels in order to provide maximum grip. Brake pads are usually inspected and serviced in order to ensure they function optimally and swiftly. On long-distance races such as Ironman or gran fondos, having effective brakes is necessary in order to feel secure and in control when fatigued.
