Butterfly generally refers to one of the four swimming strokes. It’s also a cute flying creature. It is not used frequently in competitions, though, as freestyle (also known as front crawl) is quicker and performs better. Both arms are used simultaneously above the water, with the body being propelled like that of a dolphin. This is not ideal for long-distance swimming in open waters, but is useful for strengthening the upper body, enhancing the breath, and switching from stroke to stroke. Triathletes use it in order to strengthen their shoulders or mix training, but not for racing triathlon.
