Cadence is the rate at which a cyclist pedals. It is typically expressed in revolutions per minute (RPM) per one foot. The faster the cadence, the smoother and faster it is to push the pedals. When the cadence is low, more power is generated with every crank revolution. The majority of endurance cyclists prefer maintaining a 75-85 RPM cadence for efficient performance. Cadence is substituted with stroke rate in the sport of swimming, which is the rate of arm stroke per minute. Triathletes and swimmers utilize stroke rate for achieving speed as well as efficiency just as cyclists utilize cadence. Cadence sensors or swim metronomes are devices that assist athletes in attaining their ideal rhythm for effective performance.
