Chainstays are the two horizontal tubes on a bike frame that run from the bottom bracket (crank area) to the rear wheel dropouts. They help determine frame stiffness, ride feel, and tire clearance. Shorter chainstays can improve acceleration and responsiveness, while longer ones may enhance comfort and stability—important for endurance athletes. Some time trial and triathlon bikes have specially shaped chainstays for better aerodynamics and power transfer.
