A CheckPoint, abbreviated CP, is an exact position on a race course athletes need to pass through in order to demonstrate that they are actually progressing. CPs are utilized in most events—particularly adventure races, ultras, or ultra triathlons—to monitor speed, ensure safety, as well as provide assistance.
Off-road or multi-day events have CPs known as PCPs (Passport Control Points) that are typically located in strategic areas. Competitors may have to sign in, punch a card, or be captured electronically. Failing to drop in at a CP will cost them their qualification or incur a time penalty. It is imperative that your pace and intake of nutrients be regulated through the CPs in order to complete well, particularly in unsupported events.
