Chondromalacia, also known as chondromalacia patellae or “runner’s knee,” is an ailment in which cartilage beneath the kneecap is damaged or softened. The pain and swelling results from it. It is prevalent in athletes who participate in long-distance activities such as cyclists and runners. The condition occurs because the kneecap (patella) does not track properly. This may be from weak muscles, poor movement patterns, or overuse of the same motion. It hurts when bending the knee, squatting, or descending stairs. Initial symptoms include a dull ache behind the kneecap, swelling, or a grinding sensation. Treatment typically involves resting, icing, strengthening exercises for the quadriceps and hips, and correcting movement issues. Prevention of this condition is aided by proper bike fit, running form analysis, and strengthening the core and lower extremities.
