Cobbles generally refers to a section of cycling race where the road is paved with cobblestones. Cobbles do show up every now and then in triathlons, but typically they are a phenomenon experienced in big races like Paris Roubaix and the Tour de France. Also known as Pavé, cobble sections in a race can be as exciting for the spectators as they are dangerous for the rider. Flat tires, broken spokes and crashes are quite common as these race segments are almost always very technical in nature. Most cobble sections cover only a short distance  as Race Directors are keenly away of their potential for problems.
