A “corncob” is a cycling term, and is an assembly of back gears with little or no difference in the count of gears in each. It is primarily employed for racing on the roads. It features close gear ratios that enable riders to continue with their speed with minimal change in resistance. You will typically find it on flat or hilly segments of the race. The corncob serves for time trials or criterium where quick shifting is crucial. “Straight block” is another term for this concept. Though it provides precise shifting, it lacks gears for extremely steep hills.
