A Dark Zone in an adventure race is an area in the race course that is not safe for racing when night is falling. It is not safe in these areas because of the conditions of the terrain, the dark, or wildlife. For safety purposes, the course is secured in these areas when the sun goes down. Racers have to complete that section before sundown or wait until the morning for them to proceed. Racers will occasionally have to take shelter in a secure area or check in someplace until they can continue racing.
