Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is muscle pain and stiffness that occurs after a difficult workout or race. DOMS typically worsens 24 to 48 hours after exercise and results from small tears in muscles and inflammation as they recover. Although DOMS is uncomfortable, it is normal when increasing strength is desired, indicating muscles are adapting. There is no quick fix, but discomfort can be alleviated through lighter stretches, drinking plenty of fluid, and participating in lighter activities.
