A derailleur is an element of a bicycle used for shifting the chain from one gear to another. It comprises some pulleys and the moving arm that transports the chain over the cassette or the chainrings. There is the front derailleur, which shifts the chain from the front gears, and the rear derailleur, shifting the chain on the rear cassette. Derailleurs are used in order for the gear ratio of the bicycle to be changed so that the cyclists can adapt to various conditions of the ground as well as maintain an efficient speed of pedaling, when the bicycle is being used on roads or mountains.
