The sport director is responsible for directing the tactics of the team. He is the leader of the team who issues instructions from the car. He instructs riders via radios, makes race-day tactical choices, coordinates breakaways or pursuits, and monitors the situation of the race. He tends to wave his arms out the car window and shout brief orders and instructions. Also referred to as “sports director,” he assists with preparation, gets to know the individuals, and coordinates strategy, which makes him invaluable for the performance of every team in stage races as well as in single-day races.
