A disc wheel is a solid bicycle wheel designed for minimizing air resistance in order to maximize speed. Disc wheels, unlike standard spoked wheels, contain either a smooth or solid surface through which air can move with ease. They are primarily used for time trials and triathlons, wherein aerodynamic efficiency is paramount, particularly when riding in flat courses. Although faster in straight line riding, they are heavier as well as difficult to maneuver when riding in the wind, so individuals rarely use them for roadway racing unless the conditions are exceptional or the event is unusual.
