Domestique

A domestique is a support rider who assists the leader throughout a race. Rather than attempting to win, the domestique brings riders bottles of water, chases riders who have dropped off the back of the group, serves as windbreakers for their teammates, assists on climbs or flat terrain in order to keep the group advancing, etc. The domestique’s role is well understandable in stage races and large tours, as advanced planning and preservation of energy will translate into overall victory. Although seldom recognized, domestiques are an integral component of any winning bicycle racing team, working tirelessly in the background.
