Down tube shifters are shifters in the shape of levers. They were once used for gear shifting when the brake and shift systems were independent. You don’t find them as much in newer bikes, but they can be found on some vintage or older bikes since they are straightforward and dependable. The use of these shifters involves having to remove your hand from the handlebar, so they are not as easy as contemporary shifters.
