In relays such as running, swimming, or triathlon relays with team members, the exchange is where one competitor ends and the other competitor starts. The swimmers in the pool relays cannot enter the water too soon: the swimmers may dive as much as 0.03 seconds ahead of the swimmer who is finishing his/her portion and touches the wall. A false start at an exchange can disqualify the team, so it is very critical.
