The feed zone is an area on the course where the race teams are able to provide the runners with food, beverages, or equipment. It is commonly implemented during triathlons, cycling, and ultrarunning. Feed zones are typically designated and occur at regular intervals—commonly every 15 to 25 kilometers in bicycle races or halfway in marathon and ultramarathon courses. There are regulations regarding how and where assistance may occur: support crews must remain in designated areas, and competitors must slow down or stop to receive supplies safely. Effective feeding in these zones—such as receiving bottles, gels, or bars—can be a significant factor between fading and maintaining good performance, so familiarity with these zones and practice is essential.
