Flamme Rouge

The Flamme Rouge indicates the final kilometer of the cycle race. A red arch or inflatable strip crosses the road, and there is a red kite or flag hanging underneath it. The riders and teams employ the sign as an instruction to initiate their final effort or prepare to sprint.

The flamme rouge originated in European road racing and indicates that the finish line is approaching: the position of the rider is crucial, and the energy is employed judiciously. The fans are lined along the roads, and the tension is at its highest. For stage races and one-day races, being aware of the flamme rouge assists the rider in determining his pace, trading risks and rewards as he targets the win.
