Flat start is the situation where swimmers are started from a stationary position on the starting blocks and not relay takeovers. On the starter’s signal, athletes are supposed to remain still until the go is heard. A flat start is slower compared to relay takeovers but is standard for solo events.
The flat start measures reaction, takeoff, and underwater capability. Correct block setup—foot position, block angle, and grip—can conserve precious tenths of seconds. Start practice is ongoing for the swimmer, performing the dive entry and breakout as a single, streamlined motion. False motion prior to the takeoff constitutes disqualification, and discipline and concentration are consequently imperative at the flat start.
