The forefoot strike is the running technique where the foot strikes the ground first on the ball, rather than the heel or midfoot. It allows for a quicker and more efficient stride and reduces the braking forces.
Elite runners use the forefoot striking to increase running speed and reduce injury risk. The pattern engages the calf and the foot muscles more actively and enhances elasticity and propulsion. A transition to it needs to be gradually adapted in an attempt to avoid calf strain. If done properly, it can increase running economy, absorption of shocks and cadence and is targeted extensively in coaching performance.
