Gastro Intestinal (GI) Distress

Gastrointestinal (GI) Distress GI distress is stomach and intestinal upset occurring during or after physical exertion, usually caused by imbalance of carbohydrates, dehydration, or excessive exertion. Symptoms are diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and cramps. Endurance athletes are vulnerable to GI distress as soon as nutrient consumption exceeds the capacity for digestion—during triathlons, marathons, and long rides. Precautions against symptoms include incremental training of the gut with carbohydrates, the use of easily absorbed fuels, fluid intake, and proper pace adjustment. The secret to gaining comfort and performance during prolonged activities is to pay attention to each athlete’s tolerance and to learn through experimentation.
