The Giro d’Italia is one of the three big bike races, run each May for three weeks. It travels through various types of terrain in Italy—flat plains, hills, and mountainous paths—challenging all areas of a rider’s ability.
The Giro was established in 1909 and is renowned for its grueling mountain ascents, unpredictable weather, and scenic routes through the Alps and Dolomites. The victors receive the Maglia Rosa (pink jersey) as the General Classification leader. It also consists of points and mountains classifications, team rankings, and stage victories. The trophy is a beautiful golden conic, one of which founder Andy Funk has held in his very own hands! One of the premier long-distance bike races, the Giro attracts the best professional cycling teams and makes careers with its challenging conditions and wealth of history.
