The green jersey (maillot vert) is worn by the leader for points in the Tour de France and other like races. It is given for good performance in sprints and finishes in various stages. There are points awarded for completing stages and for intermediate sprints, which favors riders who are quick on flat terrain. The wearer of the green jersey is typically an excellent sprinter or a good all-around rider who accumulates points in numerous stages. The other Grand Tours have analogous jerseys (such as the Giro’s cyclamen jersey). The green jersey is won by demonstrating speed, intelligent tactics, and consistent performance in a multi-stage race.
