Hand Entry

Hand entry is the initial phase of the swim stroke when the hand enters the water in front of the body. Proper entry position assists in developing a good catch and pull. In freestyle, the approaching hand is shoulder-width with the fingers leading and slightly extended forward so as not to cut across the midline. This smooth approach minimizes drag, preserves streamline, and positions the arm to pull effectively. The coaches use fingertip drag or one-arm swimming drills to train the technique of the approach to increase propulsion and energy saving as one swims long distances.
