Heel striking occurs when the heel of the runner touches the ground first.
Most runners tend to land on the heels when running recreationally. This makes them slow down fast and causes strain on the joints. Endurance coaches recommend landing on the middle or front of the foot. It is less tiring and reduces the likelihood of injury. It is not very easy to change the manner in which the foot lands and requires time, effort, and strengthening. Some runners, particularly for long and slow runs, tend to land on the heels despite having good rhythm and posture.
