The intermediate buoy is a midway mark between the main turn markers on an open-water swimming course that can be swum on either side of the swimmer without any penalty. Intermediate buoys assist the swimmers in staying on-line and to sight, and they offer additional visual markers on straight, long legs or on winding courses. Intermediate buoys are not compulsory turns, but they assist the competitors with navigation and pace, particularly in low-visibility or mass-start situations.
