The lead boat in open water swimming is the one that leads the lead swimmers or pack along the race course. It leads the front-runners in the right direction, specifically where there are long distances or there is poor visibility. The lead boat can also transport officials, timers, or cameras and is often in contact with course safety personnel. The position of the lead boat is strictly managed to avoid the creation of undue advantages such as wake drafting. For large events, the lead boat can be a small runabout, paddle boat, or kayak to assist with navigating as well as athlete safety.
