The leadout is one technique that is employed in bike racing. The rider accelerates at the finish of the race to assist the teammate. The team sprinter is the rider who emerges from the draft and accelerates to win the race.
Criteriums and flat stage finishes are where leadouts occur. The leadout rider does the hard work to get the sprinter teammate into the optimal position at the finish. A leadout train consisting of multiple riders can be employed by teams to go very fast and place the sprinter at the front and out of harm’s way.
