Light Zone

The light zone is an unsafe area, such as on a glacier or on an avalanche slope. The light zone is forbidden during the daytime. The teams are only permitted to pass through these zones at nighttime when it is safer to do so.
Race directors design these zones to provide protection to everyone, and runners decide whether to pass through light zones at certain times. Athletes may need to stop and recover or go around at the boundary if they arrive there at the wrong time. Passing through light zones is considered a key to strategy for multi-day events.
