In swimming, the long course pool is 50 meters in length. This is double the length of the standard short course pool, which is 25 meters or yards. The large competitions of the Olympics and World Championships are held in long course pools. Swimming in the long course pool improves the pace, endurance, and turn work of the swimmer since there are fewer walls to push off. For triathletes and long course open water swimmers, the long course training best simulates actual races. The swimmers alternate between long and short course pools to achieve endurance and pace.
