Mandatory Foot Down

Foot Down Mandatory Foot Down is a rule of racing. It is uncommon in triathlons but is found more often in mixed-surface or gravel events. This rule requires riders to completely stop in certain locations, usually at road intersections or hazardous intersections. The rider must place at least one foot on the ground or dismount the bike before continuing. This safety provision causes the athlete to slow down and be aware of cars or hazards on the road. Failure to adhere to it results in penalties or disqualification. Although uncommon on standard triathlon courses, adventure races, grueling races, and unauthorized races may include foot-down zones to prevent athletes from getting injured.
