A Master, or “veteran” in some locations, is an athlete 40 years or older who competes in age-group divisions. Master categories exist in running, cycling, swimming, triathlon, and other sports, allowing older athletes to compete on an equal basis with others of the same age. Age groups typically span five or ten years (e.g., 40–44, 45–49). Masters competitions help individuals remain active for life, develop friendships, and celebrate their achievements at any age. Most Masters athletes are concerned with both performance and health, employing appropriate training and recovery techniques to perform well in endurance events even after their 20s and 30s.
