A mesocycle is a period of training that extends from weeks to months within a structured training program. It consists of smaller training cycles that emphasize something particular, such as developing a base, raising the intensity, or tapering.
For instance, a three-week mesocycle may focus on threshold training with a recovery week prior to switching emphasis to VO₂ max work in the subsequent block. By programming mesocycles, athletes maximize adaptations—like aerobic capacity or muscular power—while controlling fatigue strategically. Coaches manipulate volume, intensity, and forms of training within each mesocycle to coincide with the most important events of the season and the overall macrocycle goals.
