Mixed relay is an event for women and men. They alternate finishing short triathlons or duathlons and then tagging the next athlete. It first featured at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the female–male–female–male sequence. The sequence was altered to male–female–male–female after the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Every competitor swims, cycles, and runs a brief distance—ordinarily a 300m swim, 6–8km cycle, and a 1.5–2km run—so making the relay both lively and exhilarating. Teams must juggle the strengths of both sexes, fast handovers, and astute order. The mixed relay demonstrates inclusivity and teamwork, and it offers a thrilling format for spectators that rewards skills from both women’s and men’s teams.
