Muscular strength refers to the maximum force a muscle or muscles can exert in a single effort. It assists in the generation of power and the prevention of injury.
Strength training involves lifting weight but only a few repetitions. Runners and cyclists may perform squats and deadlifts, and for the swimmer, there are pull exercises. Muscle strengthening enables the nervous system to function more effectively, increasing muscle fibers (largely Type II fibers), and maintaining healthy connective tissues. For endurance athletes, strong muscles enable them to move more effectively, remain stable, and maintain their power, particularly when climbing a hill, accelerating or finishing a sprint.
