Neutral service assists cyclists who have mechanical problems during a race when their team car is not nearby. A neutral service vehicle, formerly supplied by Mavic and now supplied by Shimano, carries spare wheels, bicycles, and mechanics.
When a rider gets a flat tire or experiences a problem with his bike, he signals the closest neutral car or motorcycle. The neutral mechanic assists by giving a new wheel or bike without belonging to any team, ensuring that all riders receive equal assistance. Neutral service allows the race to continue, particularly in remote locations or at neutral starts. While it is quick, riders must still go back to their team car when possible for full mechanical assistance.
