Mountain bike competitions in the US were governed by the National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA) under the management of USA Cycling. NORBA was established in 1983 and established national championships, sanctioning events, and designed rules for cross-country, downhill, and dual slalom competition. In 2008, NORBA merged into USA Cycling, which currently oversees off-road racing. NORBA established new forms of racing, cultivated mountain bike culture, and publicized the sport nationally. Its standards for the configuration of the course, classification of the riders, and safety still underpin mountain bike competitions today.
