A paddle is a flat, handheld tool. It is designed to make swimming more difficult and to assist swimmers in catching the water better. Paddles increase the size of the hand to enable feeling the water and activating the forearm earlier in the stroke. Paddles strengthen the upper body, increase body awareness, and raise the level of pulling technique. Coaches use the practice of paddle work to correct the entry of the hand into the water, maintain the elbow in a high position, and establish a strong efficient stroke.
