Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid (vitamin B₅) is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin that is required for energy metabolism. It is part of coenzyme A, which has a central role in fatty acid synthesis and oxidation and in glucose production. Pantothenic acid also participates in the synthesis of steroid hormones and neurotransmitters, adrenal function, and the health of the brain. Athletes participating in endurance activities must utilize carbohydrates and fats. There should be sufficient B₅ in order for these processes to function as required. Whole grain foods, beans and lentils, eggs, meats, and avocado contain B₅. Severe sweating and intense competition, though rare, rise to the body’s requirement for B₅. Proper diet or supplementation are necessary for maximum performance and recuperation.
