Prime

A prime or a “preem” refers to a reward given to the first rider to pass a given line, lap indicator, or checkpoint in a criterium, track race, or road stage.

Primes add excitement to the race and result in breaks or sprint battles. Teams who are hoping to capture a prime will send their strongest riders to the lead, as for a stage victory. Points, cash, or prizes reward the team and result in changes in speed and cooperation. Although a prime victory does not directly affect the overall classifications immediately, it helps riders and their teams earn sponsors and puts the rider in a better position in the race.
