A privateer is an athlete that finances the whole thing by him/herself and competes without relying on professional teams or major sponsors.
In cycling, running, or triathlon, privateers finance all expenses themselves—racing fees, transportation, and bike, running, or swimming equipment as well as coaches—through part-time work or their own pockets. Privateers are extremely committed even without the support of funded athletes. Privateers must manage logistics, mechanical issues, and fueling in competition on their own. The privateer attitude exists very strongly within endurance cultures: these athletes participate because they enjoy the sport and demonstrate strength and will. A good performance by a privateer may result in a professional contract or sponsorship for the following year.
