A pusher would pedal their bike very slowly and have a very big gear. They rely on high resistance to maintain their speed. Pushers use their muscle power rather than using quick gear changing, typically on a level section or little hill when they must maintain their speed. Pushing develops strength but results in fatigue and sore muscles when done excessively. Efficient cyclists alternate pushing and spinning—spinning up in easier cogs—to conserve muscle power and cope with varied terrains and race conditions.
