A relay start occurs when the second, third, or fourth relay swimmer jumps in the water as their teammate is touching the wall. Instead of a normal start, relay swimmers await an underwater signal—a maximum of 0.03 seconds before the touch—to achieve optimal speed. To master relay starts, swimmers must be prepared, time the jump perfectly, and have confidence in their teammates. This enables them to switch swimmers fast and conserve time in relay events.
