Revolutions per minute (RPM) measures how many complete pedal or crank turns a cyclist makes in one minute—commonly called cadence.
The ideal RPM varies based on terrain and fitness level: endurance cyclists tend to pedal between 80–100 rpm on flat ground, but during climbing, they will slow to 70–85 rpm. Monitoring RPM assists cyclists in utilizing muscles efficiently, reducing fatigue, and selecting appropriate gears. Power meters and bicycle computers display RPM in real-time, enabling athletes to practice specific cadences and develop their pedaling technique.
